Why Balabolka has stayed popular for so long
It is free, it works offline, and it opens a long list of document formats. Point it at a text, pick an installed voice, and it saves an audio file you can copy to a phone or an MP3 player. For anyone who wants long documents read aloud at no cost, on their own machine, that is hard to beat.
It is also flexible. Speed, pitch and pronunciation rules can be tuned, and long files can be split into parts. The trade off is that the sound depends on the voices installed in Windows, and every choice about structure is yours to configure.
Balabolka and AI Audiobooks compared
Balabolka’s column describes the program in general terms; options depend on its version and the voices you install.
| AI Audiobooks | Balabolka | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free import and casting; credits to generate audio | Free |
| Platform | Any modern browser: Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPad | Windows |
| Voices | 137 AI voices from Gemini Flash TTS and ElevenLabs | The voices installed on your PC |
| Internet | Needed to generate speech | Not needed with local voices |
| Characters | Detected from dialogue tags and cast automatically | One voice unless you mark up the text yourself |
| Chapters | From the EPUB contents or your headings | Splitting options you configure |
| Output | MP3 per chapter, ZIP, M4B with markers and cover | Common audio formats |
The two can sit side by side: keep Balabolka for quick personal listening on Windows and use the studio for books other people will hear.
Stay with Balabolka, or move on?
Balabolka is still the right tool if
- You are on Windows and the result is for your own ears
- You need everything offline, with no text leaving the PC
- One clear voice is all the book needs
- You want to convert a lot of text at no cost
It starts to pinch when
- You work on a Mac, Linux, a Chromebook or a tablet
- Listeners will hear it, and flat system voices tire them
- The book has dialogue and every character should sound different
- You want named chapter markers, a cover and tags in one file
System voices and AI voices over a whole novel
Built-in system voices are clear and quick, and some recent ones are good. Over nine hours, though, most sound even: questions, jokes and arguments all land at the same temperature. That is fine for a report and tiring for a thriller.
AI voices carry more natural rhythm and emotion, and they take direction. A note such as [whisper] or [furious] at the start of a line changes the delivery, and inline tags such as [sigh] or [laugh] add a human sound where you place them, as listed under AI voice emotion tags. The honest cost is that generation needs a connection and credits, about $9 to $12 per finished hour on Standard voices.
Hand-written voice tags versus a cast found for you
In a desktop reader, giving a character their own voice means marking up the text yourself where your voices support it, line by line. For a short story that is an afternoon; for a novel with four hundred lines of dialogue it is a week.
Here the AI audiobook generator reads dialogue tags such as “said Petra” or “Ivo muttered”, puts everything outside quotation marks with the narrator and assigns each named character a voice. You review the cast once, swap anything you dislike, and reuse it for the next book. Multi voice audiobook explains how speakers are found.
What leaves your computer, and what does not
Balabolka with local voices keeps everything on your PC, and that is a real advantage. In AI Audiobooks, the file is opened and split into chapters inside your browser, and nothing is uploaded until you press generate. Even then, only the lines you generate are sent to the speech model, and your manuscript is never used to train AI models. Projects are saved in your own browser under My Audiobooks.
Bringing a Balabolka book across
- 1
Save the text as TXT, DOCX or EPUB
Plain text splits on lines such as “Chapter 3” or “Part Two”; the TXT to MP3 page shows the patterns it recognises.
- 2
Open it in your browser
The file is parsed on your device and the chapter list appears before anything is uploaded.
- 3
Pick a narrator and check the cast
Audition a few narrators on your own first page, then confirm the character voices.
- 4
Generate and export
Generate a short sample free, then the rest, and download MP3 files or one M4B.
