Proof-listening before launch
Hearing the book read aloud catches typos, repeated words and confusing dialogue that survived every silent edit.
For indie authors
Your book is finished, edited and maybe already on sale as an ebook. This manuscript to audiobook workflow takes the DOCX or EPUB you publish from, casts a narrator and every character, and leaves you with M4B and MP3 files you own, ready for the stores that accept AI narration.
DOCX, EPUB files · also PDF, TXT, MD · up to 30 MB
Read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded until you generate
Five stages take a manuscript to audiobook with the fewest wasted credits. Most indie authors finish in about a week of part-time work.
Use the final, proofread file that matches your ebook. Every edit after narration means regenerating lines, so settle the words first.
Generate chapter one with two or three narrators, pick a favorite and share it with a few readers before committing the whole book.
Generate the remaining chapters, then listen at normal speed with the text open. Correct names and lifeless lines by regenerating just those lines.
Export an M4B with chapter markers, title and author, plus MP3 chapters for stores that want them. Prepare a square cover.
Upload where AI narration is accepted, disclose it as stores require, and tell your newsletter readers the audio edition is out.
A realistic manuscript to audiobook plan for a 90,000 word novel, about nine and a half hours of finished audio. Your time, not the machine’s, is the main cost.
| Stage | Your time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare the file | 1 to 2 hours | Headings, double quotes for dialogue, a list of tricky names |
| Cast and sample chapter | 1 to 2 hours | Try two narrators on the same chapter |
| Generate the book | A few hours, mostly unattended | Each chapter takes minutes |
| Proof-listen and fix | About a day | Listen once at normal speed, fix as you go |
| Export and upload | 1 to 2 hours | Store review times vary and are not included |
Check how your word count turns into hours with the audiobook cost calculator, which also compares a human narrator.
A finished audio edition is the obvious goal of a manuscript to audiobook project, but it is not the only one.
Hearing the book read aloud catches typos, repeated words and confusing dialogue that survived every silent edit.
Share a voiced first chapter with your newsletter or on a book page. The audiobook sample chapter page shows how.
A backlist book that never earned a narrator’s fee can turn its manuscript into an audiobook at a cost that suits its sales.
Keep the voices chosen for the first book and apply them to the next, so returning characters sound the same throughout.
Pair ebook and audiobook in a bundle on your own store. Sell audiobooks on your website covers the setup.
Send early listeners and reviewers MP3 chapters before launch, and gather quotes for the audio edition.

Neutral narration covers most of a manuscript audiobook. The climax, the confession and the last line of each chapter deserve more. Put a short note in square brackets at the start of a line, such as [barely holding it together] or [cold, very quiet], and the voice performs it.
For the most emotional chapters, the Expressive model (ElevenLabs v3) laughs, whispers and breaks convincingly, at a higher credit cost. Sound tags such as [sigh] and [laugh] work inside lines on the Standard, Lite and Expressive models.
Thrillers lean hard on voice: the detective, the suspect, the voice on the phone. Pick a role to hear the casting in action.

Calm, clipped narration, a villain who never raises her voice and a sergeant who always does.

Thriller audiobook narration guideCheck your contracts first. If a publisher or an earlier deal holds the audio rights, you cannot release your own edition, even of a book you wrote. Rights can revert; read the clause or ask. Audiobook rights explains the common cases in plain terms (it is not legal advice).
Disclose the narration. Stores that accept digitally narrated audiobooks generally ask you to label them as such. Describe the narration honestly in your metadata and on your book page, and follow each store’s current wording.
Choose where it sells. At the time of writing, ACX does not accept AI narration uploaded by authors, while Google Play Books and Kobo run digital narration programs under their own rules, some distributors accept disclosed AI narration, and direct sales are always open. Compare current policies in where to sell AI audiobooks.
Budget. Importing, chapter detection and casting are free for any manuscript to audiobook project. Budget roughly $80 to $110 in Standard voice credits for a nine hour novel, and more if you narrate key chapters with Expressive voices. A cover sized for audiobook stores is the other cost to plan for.
Keep the masters. Projects in the AI audiobook generator are saved in your browser, so download the finished M4B and the MP3 chapters and back them up with your manuscript files. You own the audio you make from your own text.
Either works. EPUB is the most reliable, since its contents list already names each chapter. A DOCX is fine if each chapter title uses Heading 1 or Heading 2; the Word to audiobook page covers formatting. Upload the file that matches your published edition.
Yes. Changing text after narration means regenerating those lines, and large rewrites mean regenerating chapters. Make the audio from the same final file as your ebook, so listeners and readers get the same book. A rough draft is fine for private proof-listening only.
Most stores that accept AI narration require clear disclosure, and readers appreciate it. List the narration honestly in your store metadata and product description, and check each platform’s current rules for the exact wording. Being upfront also protects your reviews, since listeners who expected a human narrator are less likely to feel misled.
With Standard voices, about $9 to $12 per finished hour, so a nine hour novel costs roughly $80 to $110. Lite voices cost less and Expressive voices more. Importing and casting are free, and new accounts created with Google can generate a short sample at no cost.
At the time of writing, Google Play Books and Kobo accept digitally narrated audiobooks under their own programs, some distributors take disclosed digital narration, and you can always sell direct. ACX is the exception: at the time of writing it does not take AI narration from authors. Policies change, so check before uploading.
Either works. Launching together lets one round of promotion sell both formats, and listeners can switch between them. A later release gives you a second announcement and time to gather feedback on a sample chapter. For backlist titles, any time is a good time.
