Books you bought on Kindle stay inside Kindle
A Kindle Store purchase is a license to read the book in Amazon’s apps and devices, protected with DRM. Turning purchased Kindle books to audiobooks would mean breaking that protection, which this tool does not do and never will. To listen to a book you bought, look for its audiobook edition, or check whether your Kindle app or device offers a read aloud or accessibility feature for personal listening.
Prepare your KDP files for a Kindle to audiobook conversion

- Start from the final published text, so the audio matches the edition readers buy
- Remove ebook-only pages such as newsletter sign-ups, “read the next book” links and review requests
- Check that dialogue sits in double quotation marks, which is how speakers are detected
- List invented names and places with a note on how each one is said
- Open the chapter list after upload and confirm it matches your table of contents

KDP Virtual Voice. At the time of writing, Amazon runs Virtual Voice, a program that turns eligible KDP ebooks into AI-narrated audiobooks sold through Amazon and Audible. Check its current eligibility and terms. If you want audio files you own, a voice per character and the freedom to sell anywhere, compare the options in KDP virtual voice alternative.
ACX and Audible uploads. ACX does not accept AI narration uploaded by authors at the time of writing, so a Kindle to audiobook edition made here cannot reach Audible through ACX. How to make an audiobook on Amazon explains the routes Amazon does offer.
Selling beyond Amazon. Google Play Books and Kobo run programs for digitally narrated audiobooks under their own rules, several distributors accept disclosed AI narration, and you can always sell direct from your own site. Policies change, so read where to sell AI audiobooks and each store’s current terms before you upload.
Exclusivity and rights. KDP Select exclusivity applies to the ebook edition; check the current terms if you are enrolled. If you signed audio rights over to a publisher, you cannot release your own audiobook, even of a book you wrote.

Can I turn Kindle books I bought into audiobooks?
No. Kindle Store purchases are protected with DRM, and this tool does not remove it. You can convert Kindle to audiobook only when you hold a DRM-free file, which in practice means a book you wrote and published, a DRM-free indie purchase or a public domain classic.
Which Kindle file formats can I upload?
None of Amazon’s own formats upload directly. Use EPUB or DOCX, the files most authors send to KDP. A DRM-free MOBI or AZW3 can be converted to EPUB in Calibre first. KFX and DRM-protected AZW files from the Kindle Store will not open.
Can I use my Kindle Create file?
Not the KPF itself, which is a package built for KDP. Upload the DOCX you imported into Kindle Create instead. Its Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles become chapters, and the voices and casting work just as they would with an EPUB.
Can I sell my Kindle audiobook on Audible?
Not through ACX, which at the time of writing turns down AI narration that authors upload. Amazon’s own Virtual Voice program is a separate route for eligible titles. Outside Amazon, Google Play Books, Kobo, distributors and direct sales are open under their own rules.
Does my Kindle already read books aloud?
Some Kindle apps and devices include read aloud or accessibility features for personal listening; availability varies by device and region. They speak in one voice and do not give you a file. For an audiobook with chapters and a cast, upload your own manuscript to the AI audiobook creator.
Is it legal to make an audiobook of a Kindle book I did not write?
Publishing or sharing it needs the audio rights, which belong to the author or publisher. Public domain books are free to narrate, and a DRM-free copy you own can be narrated for private listening. Books bought on Kindle cannot be converted here at all.
