An ElevenLabs Alternative for Audiobooks That Keeps the Same Voices

Most people looking for an ElevenLabs alternative for audiobooks are not unhappy with the voices, and they would not need to be: our Premium and Expressive voices are ElevenLabs voices. What differs is everything around them. A book file goes in, the chapters and the cast are worked out for you, you direct lines in brackets, and an M4B with chapter markers comes out. Here is when that helps, and when ElevenLabs on its own is the better fit.

Same voice engine, different job

Sixty-seven of the 137 voices in AI Audiobooks are ElevenLabs voices, run on two of its models: Turbo 2.5 (our Premium model) and v3 (our Expressive model, with laughs, whispers and the widest emotional range). The other seventy are Gemini Flash TTS voices at a lower cost per character. So this comparison is about workflow, not about whose voices sound better.

Cases where ElevenLabs alone fits better

You need your own voice. If the book should be read by a clone of your voice, or by a voice designed from a prompt, ElevenLabs offers that and AI Audiobooks does not yet. Cloning is on our roadmap, not in the product.

You are building software, not a book. For an app, a game or a voice agent, its API and developer tools are the point. AI Audiobooks is a studio for finished audiobooks, not a speech API.

You use its other tools every week. Dubbing, voice changing and sound effects live in the same account. If those are part of your routine, one subscription may simply be easier.

Your language is not in our library. ElevenLabs lists a wider set of languages than our 13, so check both for the language you need.

What changes when the project is a whole novel

The cast is worked out for you. Upload a manuscript and the AI audiobook creator reads the dialogue tags (“said Ren”, “Mara whispered”), gives the narrator everything outside quotes and assigns up to ten named characters their own voices, plus an “Other voices” role. You review and swap instead of tagging thousands of lines. The multi voice audiobook page shows how attribution works.

Chapters come from the file. An EPUB’s table of contents, a Word file’s Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles, or lines such as “Chapter 3” in a text file set the chapters. Cover, copyright and contents pages are set aside, so narration opens on the story.

Direction lives in the text. A note in square brackets at the start of a line, such as [whisper] or [like a weary detective], shapes the delivery. Inline sound tags such as [laugh] and [sigh] work on Expressive (ElevenLabs v3) and on the Standard and Lite models, but not on Premium (Turbo 2.5). The full list is on the AI voice emotion tags page.

The output is a finished file. Export one M4B with named chapter markers, title, author and cover, an MP3 per chapter, or a ZIP with a chapters index. M4B vs MP3 explains which suits your listeners.

Moving a book over from ElevenLabs

  1. 1

    Start from the manuscript

Upload the EPUB or DOCX the text came from, not the audio. Chapters and speakers are read from the file.

  2. 2

    Match your voices

Pick the same or similar ElevenLabs voices for the narrator and leads from the premium list, or try Standard voices for a cheaper pass.

  3. 3

    Carry over your notes

Turn delivery notes into bracket directions at the start of the lines that need them.

  4. 4

    Generate one chapter and compare

Listen against your existing version, then generate the rest and export M4B or MP3.

ElevenLabs alternative for audiobooks: FAQ

Are the Premium and Expressive voices really ElevenLabs voices?

Yes. Premium runs on ElevenLabs Turbo 2.5 and Expressive on ElevenLabs v3, across 67 premium voices in the library. You cast them like any other voice and pay per 1,000 characters: 13 credits on Premium and 34 on Expressive, against 9 for Standard Gemini voices.

Can I use my ElevenLabs cloned voice here?

Not at the moment. Voice cloning, including bringing in a cloned voice, is not available in AI Audiobooks yet; it is on the roadmap. If the book must be read in your own cloned voice today, producing it in ElevenLabs is the practical route, and you can still package chapter files with the free MP3 to M4B converter.

Do sound tags like [laugh] work with the ElevenLabs voices?

On the Expressive model (ElevenLabs v3), yes: inline tags such as [laugh], [sigh] and [whisper] land where you put them. The Premium model (Turbo 2.5) does not support inline sound tags. Standard and Lite voices support them too, at a lower cost per character.

Is it cheaper than using ElevenLabs directly?

That depends on your plan and model. Here a finished hour costs about $13 to $18 on Premium, $33 to $46 on Expressive and $9 to $12 with Standard voices. ElevenLabs prices its own plans differently, so check their current pricing against your word count before you decide.

Does ElevenLabs make audiobooks?

Yes. ElevenLabs has long-form tools for narrating books and articles, and they change often, so check what its editor and publishing options include today. The difference here is a workflow built only for books: automatic casting from dialogue tags, chapters taken from your file and an M4B export.

Who owns an audiobook made with ElevenLabs voices here?

You own the audio you generate from text you hold the rights to, whichever voice reads it. Where you can sell it is up to each store; at the time of writing ACX does not take author-uploaded AI narration, while others are more open. Where to sell AI audiobooks compares current rules.
