Calibre EPUB to audiobook in five steps

Calibre does the format work; the audiobook studio does the voices. Each tool does what it is best at.

  1. 1

    Pick a DRM-free book

Choose a title you wrote, a public domain classic or a DRM-free purchase. Locked books will not convert in Calibre or here.

  2. 2

    Convert it to EPUB

If the book is a MOBI, AZW3, RTF or ODT, select it, click Convert books and set the output format at the top right to EPUB.

  3. 3

    Fix the title and author

Press E to edit metadata before converting. The title and author inside the EPUB carry through to the tags of your M4B.

  4. 4

    Save the EPUB

Use Save to disk and pick the single EPUB format, or right-click the book and choose Open containing folder.

  5. 5

    Upload and generate

Drop the EPUB onto the uploader above, check the chapters and cast, and generate a short sample before the rest.

From Calibre to audiobook: what to do with each format

Calibre opens dozens of formats, but the audiobook studio accepts EPUB, DOCX, PDF, TXT and Markdown. This is the shortest route from each one to a Calibre audiobook.

From Calibre to audiobook: what to do with each format
Format in CalibreBest route
EPUBUpload it as it is
AZW3 or MOBI without DRMConvert books, output EPUB, then upload
RTF, ODT, FB2, HTML or LITConvert to EPUB first
DOCXUpload directly; Heading 1 and Heading 2 become chapters
TXTUpload directly, or convert to EPUB if you want a contents list
PDFUpload the PDF itself; a PDF to EPUB conversion can leave broken lines
KFX or any DRM-locked fileWill not open, in a Calibre conversion or here

Holding a PDF? The PDF to audiobook converter reflows text PDFs directly, which usually beats converting them in Calibre first.

Get the contents list right before you upload

Why the contents list matters. Chapters come from the EPUB table of contents, either the EPUB 3 navigation document or the NCX file that Calibre writes. One entry becomes one chapter marker with the same title, as in any EPUB to audiobook conversion, so a clean list is the whole secret of a good Calibre to audiobook conversion.

Use the conversion settings. In the Convert books dialog, the Structure detection and Table of contents sections decide which headings start chapters. The defaults look for headings such as “Chapter 4”, “Part Two” or “Prologue”. If your book uses plain numbers or ornaments, adjust them before converting.

Repair stubborn books with Edit ToC. For a converted EPUB with one giant chapter, open Calibre’s Edit ToC tool and generate the list from the major headings. Delete entries for scene breaks, the copyright page and the contents page itself, then save.

Check it for free before generating. Open the saved EPUB in the EPUB chapter extractor to see every chapter with its word count and narration time. Anything odd there will look the same in your audiobook, so fix it in Calibre first.

Calibre text to speech or a full-cast export?

At the time of writing, Calibre’s viewer can read a book aloud with your computer’s voices, recent releases keep adding speech options, and community plugins offer more. Here is how that compares with the studio.

Back into the library: keep the M4B beside the ebook

Calibre will store any file with a book record, so your audiobook can live next to the EPUB it came from. Select the book, open the Add books menu and choose to add files to the selected book record, then pick the M4B or the ZIP of chapter MP3s.

Calibre is a librarian, not an audiobook player. To listen, open the M4B in Apple Books, BookPlayer, Smart AudioBook Player or Audiobookshelf; how to play M4B files covers every platform. Its chapter markers carry the titles from your contents list.

A note on DRM-protected books

Calibre does not remove DRM on its own, and this studio does not either. Books bought in the Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo stores stay locked, whichever tool you open them in. The Calibre EPUB to audiobook route is for files you are free to use: your own work, public domain titles and DRM-free purchases. See Kindle to audiobook for what authors on KDP can do.

Calibre EPUB to audiobook FAQ

Can Calibre text to speech save an audio file?

At the time of writing, Calibre’s viewer reads books aloud live, and what can be saved depends on your version and any plugins you add. Either way it is one voice reading everything. For chapter files and a cast, export the EPUB and upload it to the AI audiobook generator.

Do I need a Calibre audiobook plugin for this?

No. Nothing is installed in Calibre. You save the EPUB from your library, upload it in the browser, and the casting, narration and M4B building all happen here. Calibre stays exactly as it is, and you can add the finished audiobook back to the book record.

Where does Calibre keep the EPUB file?

Inside your Calibre library folder, in a subfolder for the author and then the title. The quick way is to right-click the book and choose Open containing folder, or use Save to disk and pick the EPUB format to copy it somewhere easy.

Why does my converted EPUB have only one chapter?

Calibre did not find headings to build the contents list from. Rerun the conversion with adjusted Structure detection settings, or use the Edit ToC tool to generate entries from the major headings. Then upload the fixed EPUB for your Calibre EPUB to audiobook conversion.

Will my Calibre metadata carry over?

The title and author stored in the EPUB carry through to the M4B tags, so audiobook players show the right names. Edit them in Calibre before you convert or save the file, because changes made afterwards only update the library, not the saved copy.

Can I convert Kindle books stored in Calibre?

Only DRM-free ones. A MOBI or AZW3 without protection converts to EPUB in Calibre and then uploads normally. Kindle Store purchases in KFX or protected AZW form will not convert, and this tool does not remove DRM. Your own books, exported from a formatting tool, are the easiest source of all.
