Why authors sell audiobooks direct
A bigger share of each sale
Payment and delivery fees are usually far smaller than a retailer’s cut, though every service charges differently. Check current fees before you choose.
No gatekeeper for AI narration
Your store, your rules. A clearly labelled AI edition can go on sale the day it is finished.
The buyer’s email
Each sale can add a reader to your mailing list, with their consent. Retailers do not pass that on.
Bundles and series deals
Sell the ebook and audiobook together, a whole series at once, or a signed paperback with the audio.
Early access
Release to your readers before the stores, or sell chapters to supporters as they are finished.
Your price, your timing
Run a sale whenever you like, without waiting for a store’s promotion calendar.
Ways to deliver audiobooks from your own site
| Option | How listeners get the audio | Good for | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audiobook delivery service, such as BookFunnel | Download links plus a listening app, at the time of writing | An easy experience for less technical listeners | Plan tiers and which shops it connects to |
| Digital product store, such as Payhip or Gumroad | A download link after payment | Simple setups and quick launches | Fees, file size limits, tax handling |
| Your own shop, such as Shopify or WooCommerce | A digital delivery app or plugin | Authors already selling print books or merch | Which app handles large audio files |
| Membership platform, such as Patreon or Ko-fi | Files or private audio posts for supporters | Serials and early access | Whether one-off purchases are supported |
| Plain download link | A link you send after payment | Very small launches and tests | Link sharing and manual work |
Services, features and fees change, and the names are examples rather than endorsements. Read each provider’s current terms, especially on file size and sales tax.
Which files to give buyers
Send two versions. An M4B with chapter markers, a cover and title tags gives the best experience in audiobook apps on phones and computers. A ZIP of chapter MP3s covers many other devices, including compatible car stereos and older players; buyers may need to extract the files first. Both come from the same export, so offering both costs you nothing.
Add a short “how to listen” note to the download page: which app to use on each device and how to import the file, because many buyers have never added an audiobook by hand. Link them to how to play M4B files. If you already have MP3s from elsewhere, the free MP3 to M4B converter joins them into one file with chapters, and M4B vs MP3 explains the formats.

Pricing an audiobook you sell direct
Look at what books of similar length and genre sell for on the big stores, then decide where you sit. Many authors price direct a little below retail, or match retail and add a bonus such as the ebook, because readers who buy direct are choosing to support the author. Bundles of a full series often sell better than single titles.
Know your margin. With standard AI voices a finished hour costs roughly $9 to $12 in credits, so a 9 hour novel costs about $80 to $110 to produce. The audiobook cost calculator compares that with a human narrator and shows how many sales cover it.
Being upfront with buyers about AI narration
No store rule forces you to mention it, but mention it anyway. Put “Narrated by AI voices” or “Full-cast AI narration” in the product description and next to the sample player. Buyers who knew what to expect rarely ask for refunds, and payment providers take a dim view of chargebacks from customers who feel misled.
Then let the sample make the case. A strong scene with dialogue, with a distinct voice for each character, is the best argument you have. An audiobook sample chapter cut from chapter one or a favourite scene works well on the product page.
Tax, refunds and file sharing
Digital products are taxed in many countries, often according to where the buyer lives. Some sellers use a platform that acts as merchant of record and collects the tax for them; others collect it themselves. Check how your chosen service handles it and ask an accountant if you are unsure, because this page is not tax advice.
Write a clear refund policy before launch, such as a refund within a set number of days if the files do not work. Expect a little sharing: most authors sell DRM-free files and rely on goodwill, helped by delivery services that limit or track downloads.
