Where Apple’s program makes good sense
Your readers are on Apple Books. If most of your audience buys there and your distributor offers digital narration for your title, a store-made edition reaches them with almost no work.
You want no production at all. There is nothing to cast, generate or upload yourself; the partner handles the process and the audiobook appears in the store.
The book suits one steady voice. Many romance, self-development and nonfiction titles sound right with a single narrator chosen for the genre, which is the core of Apple’s approach.
One digital voice, or a cast you direct
Picture a scene with a detective, two suspects and a narrator. With one digital voice, the listener relies on “she said” to keep track. With a cast, each suspect sounds different from the first word, and the reveal lands harder because the guilty voice is one we have heard before.
In AI Audiobooks the cast is found for you from dialogue tags, up to ten named characters plus an “Other voices” role, and you can swap any voice. Then you direct: a note such as [cold, measured] or [panicking] at the start of a line shapes it, and inline tags such as [sigh] add a breath or a laugh. The list of tags is on the AI voice emotion tags page.
Apple Books and every other store
A store-made edition is shaped by that store’s terms. Audio you generate yourself is a file you hold: an M4B with named chapters, title, author and cover, or one MP3 per chapter. You can sell it on your own website, and offer it to stores and distributors that accept AI narration under their current rules. Where to sell AI audiobooks keeps that list up to date.
Some distributors deliver audiobooks to Apple Books as well as other stores. Whether AI narration is accepted on a particular route depends on the distributor and on Apple, so ask before you upload. M4B is also the format Apple Books plays natively, so your own copy sits happily in your Apple Books library; the M4B audiobook maker explains how chapters are built.
Keeping voices consistent across a series
Series readers notice when a voice changes. In AI Audiobooks you save a cast once and reuse it for every book, so the narrator and each returning character sound the same in book five as in book one, and a new character simply joins the cast.
Plan the cast at the start: give the narrator and the characters who appear in every book the voices you like best, and keep a short note of names and how to say them. Store programs choose from their own voice options title by title, so ask how a series would stay consistent before you commit several books.
Questions to ask your distributor before you choose
The answers vary by partner and change over time, so get them in writing for your title.
- Is Apple’s digital narration offered for this title, language and genre?
- Who controls the narration files once they are made?
- Can the digitally narrated edition be sold outside Apple Books?
- May I release a second audio edition of the same book elsewhere?
- How are audiobook royalties calculated and paid?
