What Google’s auto-narration offers
Auto-narration works on ebooks you already publish through Play Books Partner Center. You choose a voice, preview chapters, and adjust pronunciation and pacing where the reading goes wrong, and Google has added options over time, including more voices for some languages. The finished audiobook is listed on Google Play next to the ebook.
Eligibility, languages, pricing rules and whether you can use the audio elsewhere are all set by Google and can change. Read the current Partner Center help pages before you plan around any of them.

You can still sell on Google Play either way
Google Play Books also accepts audiobooks you upload yourself, including disclosed digital narration under its rules at the time of writing. So a full-cast edition made here can go on Google Play as a regular audiobook, as well as on other stores and your own site. The steps are in publish audiobook on Google Play.
When auto-narration is the right call
The ebook already sells on Google Play. If it is there and eligible, auto-narration is the shortest path to an audio edition for the same readers.
One narrator suits the book. For nonfiction, guides and quieter fiction, a single clear voice may be all you need, and Google’s controls let you fix how names are read.
You do not want to manage files. Everything stays inside Partner Center, with no uploads to prepare or chapter files to name.
Signs your book would gain from a cast
If two or more of these fit, generate a sample chapter with a cast before you settle on a single voice.
- A third or more of the text is dialogue
- Three or more characters often talk in the same scene
- Characters differ in age, accent or species, and the prose leans on it
- Ebook readers mention losing track of who is speaking
- It is book one of a series you plan to keep in audio
Directing a performance versus adjusting a reading
Fixing how a word is pronounced is one kind of control. Telling a voice to deliver a line [through gritted teeth], [as if reading a ransom note] or [half asleep] is another, and it is what turns a reading into a performance. In the AI audiobook generator you write those notes in square brackets at the start of any line, and inline tags such as [laugh] or [breathe] land exactly where you type them.
The cast comes first. Each speaking character is detected from the dialogue tags, matched on gender where the text is clear and given their own voice from 137, with the narrator taking everything outside quotes. Read multi voice audiobook for how attribution handles tricky scenes, then fix single lines without touching the rest of the chapter.
Files that are not tied to one storefront
Every export downloads to your device: one M4B with named chapter markers, title, author and cover; one MP3 per chapter; or a ZIP with a chapters index. Kobo, several distributors and your own website accept AI narration under their own rules at the time of writing, and M4B vs MP3 explains which of them want which file.
Keeping the files also means keeping control. Price changes, new stores, a second edition with a different narrator: all of them start from audio on your own drive rather than a listing you would have to rebuild.
