Two ways onto Google Play Books
Google Play Books sells audiobooks in its app and on the web, and it gives publishers two routes. The first is to upload a finished audiobook you produced, read by a human or by AI voices. The second is Google’s auto-narration, which turns an eligible ebook you already sell on Google Play into an audiobook read by a Google digital voice.
Auto-narration is quick and has been free for eligible ebooks, but you work within Google’s voices and editing tools. Uploading your own audio takes more preparation and gives you control of the cast, the delivery and the files. Google Play auto narration alternative compares the two routes in depth.
How to publish an audiobook on Google Play, from account to listing
- 1
Check access
Sign in to Google Play Books Partner Center with the account that will receive payments and confirm the option to add an audiobook appears. It has not been available to every publisher or country.
- 2
Add the audiobook
Create a new entry for the audio edition and fill in title, author, narrator, description, language, categories and series. Link it to the ebook if Google offers the option.
- 3
Upload files and cover
Add the chapter files in reading order and a square cover. Partner Center checks the files and flags format or quality problems before you can publish.
- 4
Price, declare, publish
Set prices and territories, declare AI narration where the form asks for it and publish. The audiobook is reviewed before it appears in the store.
Google Play Books audiobook files: what to have ready
Google lists its accepted formats and quality minimums in the Partner Center help pages. Check them on the day you export; these are the points that matter most.
- Chapter files in order. One file per chapter, named so they sort correctly (01, 02, 03). MP3 is widely accepted; the help page lists other formats.
- Consistent quality. The same bitrate and levels across the book, at or above the minimum quality Google asks for.
- A square cover. High resolution with readable text. The audiobook cover size guide covers dimensions.
- An honest narrator credit. For AI narration, follow Google’s wording for synthesized or digital voices instead of inventing a human name.
- Clean openings and endings. A moment of silence at the start and end of each file, with credits at the beginning and end of the book.
- Matching metadata. The same title, series and author spelling as your ebook, so the editions link up in the store.
Declaring AI narration on Google Play
At the time of writing, Google accepts audiobooks narrated with synthesized voices when they are declared, and labels them for listeners. Answer the narration question honestly and use the narrator wording Google asks for; it is the same standard Google applies to its own auto-narrated titles.
The quality bar is still yours to meet. Listen to each chapter before upload, fix mispronounced names and flat lines, and make sure dialogue is easy to follow. With the AI audiobook generator, each character gets a separate voice, and fixing a line means regenerating that line alone.
Uploading your own audio vs auto-narration
| Question | Your own audiobook files | Google auto-narration |
|---|---|---|
| Who narrates | Any human or AI narration you produce | A Google digital voice |
| Casting | You choose a voice for each role | You choose from Google’s voice list |
| Starting point | Finished chapter files | An ebook already on Google Play |
| Effort | Produce, proof-listen and upload | Pick a voice, review, publish |
| Use outside Google Play | Yes, the files are yours | Check Google’s current terms |
| Cost | Your production cost | No charge for eligible ebooks, at the time of writing |
Auto-narration features and terms change. Read Google’s current help pages for both routes before you decide.
Prices, territories and review on Google Play
You set a list price per currency or let Google convert one price for you. Google may run its own promotions, and its pricing rules can take account of what you charge elsewhere, so read the current pricing policy before you choose a number. Pick territories carefully if you hold audio rights only in some countries.
After you publish, review usually takes from a few days to a couple of weeks. Once the audiobook is live, open it in the Google Play Books app on a phone and check the chapter list, cover, narrator credit and sample. Payment and royalty terms are in Partner Center; rely on the current figures there rather than numbers quoted elsewhere.
Selling the same files beyond Google Play
Google Play does not ask for exclusivity at the time of writing, so the same chapter MP3s and cover can also go to Kobo, to Spotify through its author tools or a distributor, and to your own store. Publish audiobook on Kobo covers the store most authors add next.
Keep one master folder per book: final manuscript, chapter files, M4B, cover and metadata text. When you correct a line, update every store from the same folder so the editions stay identical.
