Fanfiction to Audiobook for Your Fic and Its Whole Cast

Turning fanfiction to audiobook takes one paste: drop in a chapter of your fic and hear a narrator for the prose and a separate AI voice for every character, then keep the MP3 or M4B. It is built for your own works, for fics whose authors said yes, and for listening on your own.

Why a fanfic audiobook needs more than one voice

Fic lives on banter. Plain fanfic text to speech flattens the argument in chapter nine into one long monologue, and you lose track of who is teasing whom. Here, each quoted line is matched to its speaker from the dialogue tag, so the two leads, the meddling best friend and the villain of the week each get a voice of their own.

You can cast up to ten named characters per project plus a narrator, with an “Other voices” role for minor speakers. Pick from 137 voices, try a line before you commit, and keep the same cast for every chapter, sequel and timestamp fic in the series.

From draft to fanfiction audiobook in four steps

There is no link import from fic archives, so fanfic to audiobook starts from text: your own draft, or a work you have permission to voice.

  1. 1

    Paste the chapter

Copy the text from your draft or your own posted work. Headings such as “Chapter 4” split a multi-chapter fic into tracks; you can also upload TXT, DOCX, Markdown or EPUB.

  2. 2

    Tidy the extras

Everything in the box is read aloud. Delete end notes, thank-yous and links, and keep the content warnings if you want listeners to hear them first.

  3. 3

    Cast the characters

Check the detected speakers, swap any voice, and give fan favorites the sound you have always heard in your head. Add a [whisper] or [teasing] direction where a line needs it.

  4. 4

    Listen or share

Download one MP3 per chapter or a single M4B with chapter markers. Keep it for yourself, or share your own fic as audio with a clear AI narration label.

Whose fic you can voice, and where the audio can go

Fandom runs on goodwill, and fanfiction audiobooks follow the same norms as podfic, whatever archive the story lives on.

Fine to make and share

  • Fics you wrote yourself, including gifts and exchange pieces
  • A co-written fic, once every co-author agrees
  • Another writer’s fic when they have said yes, with credit and a link back to the original

Keep it private or ask first

  • Someone else’s fic with no permission: personal listening on your own device only
  • Any fic whose author asks for no podfic, no audio or no AI in their profile or notes
  • Selling fanfic audio or putting it behind a paywall, since fan works are traditionally shared for free

What changes when long fics become audio

A 200,000 word slow burn makes a long fanfiction audiobook. These details keep it listenable.

01

POV switches

One narrator reads all the prose, so mark a POV change with a scene break line. In first-person fic, give the narrator and the POV character the same voice.

02

Canon names said right

Fandom names and invented places can trip a voice. Respell a name in the line where it stumbles and regenerate only that line.

03

Ensembles and crossovers

The ten characters with the most dialogue get voices. For a crossover with two full casts, split the fic into arcs so each project voices the right people.

04

Chapters you can find

Chapter titles become M4B markers, so a listener can jump back to the confession scene without hunting through a ten hour file.

Sample voices for slow burns and enemies to lovers

Most fic is a romance at heart. Hear the duet and supporting voices a fanfic audiobook tends to get, then recast any role in the studio.

Fandom etiquette for sharing a fanfiction audiobook

Podfic is a human tradition, so say what yours is. Readers have recorded fic aloud for decades, always with the author’s blessing and full credit. If you share a fanfiction audiobook made with AI voices, label it as AI narration in the title or notes, never let it pass as a human performance, and link the original text so the author gets the readers.

Ask in the open, and accept a no. Many writers state their audio permissions in their profile. If they do not, ask by comment or message and wait for a clear yes before posting anything. Some writers welcome human podfic but not AI voices; that is their call to make about their work.

Your own fic is the easy case. You can turn your own fanfiction to audiobook files and post them next to the text, send them to your beta readers, or keep them for proof-listening a long fic before the next update. Fan works build on someone else’s world, so keep them free to listen to.

Archive specifics differ. If your fic is on AO3, the AO3 to audiobook page covers its EPUB download and podfic posting. For stories on Wattpad, see Wattpad to audiobook. For the wider legal picture, read the general audiobook rights guide; it is not legal advice.

Privacy for drafts. Only the lines you generate are sent to the speech model, and your text is never used to train AI models. Unfinished chapters can stay unfinished until you are ready, saved in your browser under My Audiobooks. Original fiction works the same way in the AI audiobook generator.

Fanfiction to audiobook FAQ

Can I share audio of another writer’s fic if I credit them?

Credit alone is not permission. Turning someone else’s fanfiction to audiobook files for private listening is one thing; sharing them needs the author’s clear yes first, then credit and a link to the original. If their profile or notes say no audio or no AI, keep it to yourself.

Should I label AI narration when I share my fic as audio?

Yes. Say it is AI narration in the title, summary or notes, name the voices if you like, and link the text version. Listeners in fandom care about the difference between human podfic and generated audio, and a clear label avoids misunderstandings.

How do I bring in a fic from FanFiction.net, Tumblr or a blog?

There is no URL import for fanfic to audiobook projects, so copy the text from your own draft or your posted work and paste it in. You can also upload a TXT, DOCX, Markdown or EPUB file. Put “Chapter 1”, “Chapter 2” and so on above each chapter to get separate tracks.

Can a first-person fic sound right with a narrator?

Yes. In first person, the narrator is the POV character, so pick a voice that suits them for the Narrator role and give the same voice to their character role. Their thoughts and their quoted lines then sound like one person.

Do author’s notes and warnings get read aloud?

Anything left in the text is narrated. Most people delete end notes, kudos requests and links before generating, and keep the rating and content warnings at the start of chapter one so listeners hear them before the story begins.

How much would a 100,000 word fic cost to voice?

A 100,000 word fanfic audiobook runs about 10.8 hours and costs roughly $95 to $130 with Standard voices, less with Lite. Pasting, chapter detection and casting are free, and signing up with Google gets you 100 gift credits (valid for 7 days, about 12 minutes on Standard; usage varies by text and voice tier) for a short sample before choosing a plan.
