For AO3 writers and readers

AO3 to Audiobook, Starting from the Work’s EPUB

AO3 to audiobook starts with a button the Archive already gives you: Download, then EPUB. Upload that file here and every chapter of the work becomes a track, with a narrator for the prose and a separate AI voice for each character. It is meant for works you wrote and for private listening; posting audio of someone else’s work needs their permission.

The AO3 to audiobook workflow, step by step

Going from an AO3 work to audiobook files takes little setup, because the download already holds the chapter list, the title and the author name.

  1. 1

    Download the EPUB

On the work page, open the Download menu and choose EPUB. A multi-chapter work downloads whole, with every posted chapter in order.

  2. 2

    Upload it here

Drop the file on the uploader above. It is read in your browser, and nothing leaves your device until you choose to generate audio.

  3. 3

    Check the chapter list

Chapters come from the EPUB contents. The Archive’s preface page with tags and summary, and its closing page, may appear as entries of their own; generate only what you want to hear.

  4. 4

    Cast and export

Review the detected speakers, swap any voice, then download one MP3 per chapter or an M4B with chapter markers. Unfinished chapters are left out of the M4B.

Your own works, or private listening only

Making AO3 audiobooks of your own works is the simple case: post the audio, send it to your readers, use it to proof-listen. A work by someone else is theirs. Listening privately on your own device is one thing; posting, sharing or uploading the audio needs the author’s clear yes, and many authors specifically say no to AI voices.

What the EPUB brings to an AO3 audiobook

The Archive builds its downloads with care, which makes the file a clean starting point.

01

Chapter titles

Each chapter in the work’s contents becomes a chapter marker with the same title, so “Chapter 12: The Masquerade” is easy to find in a player.

02

Title and author tags

The work title and the author’s pseud come from the EPUB metadata and carry into the M4B tags, so the credit travels with the file.

03

Notes inside chapters

Chapter notes sit in the chapter text and get narrated. To drop them, copy the chapter text instead, cut the notes and paste it into the paste tab.

04

Works in progress

When a WIP updates, download the EPUB again, start a new project with the same cast and generate only the new chapters.

05

Series

Each work in a series downloads on its own. Make one project per work and reuse the cast, so the characters sound the same from part one onward.

06

Private by design

Parsing happens on your device, the speech model sees only the lines you generate, and the work is never used for AI training. Projects stay in your browser.

Which AO3 download to use for audio

The Archive offers several download formats at the time of writing. Here is how each one works for AO3 text to speech.

Previews are the provider’s own samples of voices you can cast in the studio.

Podfic etiquette before an AO3 audiobook leaves your device

Podfic has a long history on the Archive. Readers record works aloud and post the recording as its own work, credited to the original author and linked as inspired by the text. That tradition runs on permission: many authors keep a blanket permission statement in their profile, and podficcers ask when there is none.

Ask about AI specifically. An author who welcomes human podfic may not want AI narration of their words. If you hope to share audio made from someone else’s work, ask whether AI voices are fine, wait for a clear yes and keep the message. A no is a final answer.

Label it plainly. When you post AO3 works as audiobooks, whether your own or with permission, say in the title or summary that the narration is AI generated, list the voices if you like, and link the text. Check the Archive’s current Terms of Service and FAQ for its rules on AI-generated content before you post.

Keep it free. The Archive is non-commercial, and fan works are shared without charge. Do not sell an AO3 audiobook or put it behind a paywall. For the broader view of fic and audio, see fanfiction to audiobook, which also covers works that live on other archives.

Offline files: AO3 to MP3 or M4B

A long slow burn is easier on the commute as files you own than as a browser tab. The MP3 export gives you one file per chapter, or a ZIP of every chapter plus a chapters index. The M4B export puts the whole work in one file with named chapter markers, the title, the pseud and the cover, if the EPUB carries one.

M4B files open in Apple Books, BookPlayer and Smart AudioBook Player, among others; see how to play M4B files for each device. For original fiction outside the Archive, the AI audiobook generator takes TXT, DOCX, PDF and Markdown as well.

AO3 to audiobook FAQ

Does AO3 narrate works itself?

At the time of writing, the Archive does not offer built-in narration. Readers use their device’s read-aloud or a screen reader, and human podfic is posted as separate works. Sites change, so look at what the Archive offers today. The AO3 to audiobook route here works from the EPUB you download.

Can I make audio of a fic I love but did not write?

For private listening on your own device, many readers do. Sharing, posting or uploading that audio needs the author’s clear permission, and you should ask whether AI narration in particular is fine. If their profile says no podfic or no AI, keep it to yourself.

Can I post my AI narration to the Archive as podfic?

For your own works, read the Archive’s Terms of Service and FAQ on AI-generated content first, then label the narration as AI, tag it clearly and link the text. For anyone else’s work, you need their permission for AI audio before posting.

Why is there a preface chapter in my AO3 audiobook?

The Archive’s EPUB starts with a page holding the title, tags, warnings and summary, and it may show up as its own entry. Generate only the chapters you want to hear. The M4B export leaves out chapters you have not generated.

How do I keep up with a WIP that updates every week?

Download the EPUB again after each update, start a new project, apply the cast you saved and generate only the new chapters. The voices stay the same, and you only spend credits on the chapters you have not heard.

Can a whole AO3 series become one audiobook?

Each work downloads as its own EPUB, so the cleanest result is one project and one M4B per work, all with the same cast. Name the files by series order, and players will list them like volumes of a book series.
